Heating Oil Tank Size Chart: Dimensions, Capacities and Inch-to-Gallon Data
Granby Industries' and Highland Tank's published charts for nominal 275-gallon vertical tanks differ by no more than 1.6 gallons at any of 44 matched one-inch depths; the nominal 330-gallon comparison reaches 6.5 gallons.
A heating oil tank size chart is only useful once you know which tank it applies to. This release assembles 55 manufacturer-documented model or configuration records from Granby Industries, Highland Tank and Roth North America and finds six distinct footprints carrying a nominal 275-gallon label. The mean absolute difference in the matched 275-gallon comparison is 0.6 gallon. These charts are not interchangeable. This page publishes the dimensions, matched row comparison, source cells, methods and exclusions that determine which chart applies.
What are the key heating oil tank size chart statistics?
These figures lead with the numbers most likely to be needed in a deadline-driven lookup. Each line is self-contained, names its source and carries the July 27, 2026 verification date.
1. Granby's and Highland Tank's published vertical charts for a nominal 275-gallon tank differ by no more than 1.6 gallons at any matched one-inch depth across all 44 rows; the mean absolute difference is 0.6 gallon. 2. The same comparison for nominal 330-gallon vertical tanks reaches a peak absolute difference of 6.5 gallons with a mean of 3.4 gallons. Calculated July 27, 2026 from the same manufacturer charts.

This dataset documents six distinct manufacturer footprints carrying a nominal 275-gallon label: two Granby steel obround orientations, two Highland Tank orientations, the Roth EcoDWT plus 3 1000L and the Roth EcoDWT plus 3 1000LH. In Granby's seven-column vertical chart, the 120- and 240-gallon columns continue to 47 inches and finish at 123 and 245 gallons, respectively; four other columns end at 44 inches below their nominal labels, and the 230-gallon column has no matching model in Granby's current U.S. Standard lineup. What does the heating oil tank size chart show by model?
Nominal capacity does not identify a tank. Across the 55 manufacturer-documented records, 22 distinct nominal capacities appear in different shapes and orientations, so manufacturer, construction, model and orientation must be matched before a conversion chart applies.
Dimensions are shown in the order the manufacturer publishes them. Where a source gives height, width and length, the table keeps that order rather than silently reordering the figures.
Steel obround tanks
"Obround" means a rectangle capped with semicircular ends — the flattened oval seen on the end of many basement tanks. UL 80 permits obround construction, and that changing cross-section is why gallons per inch is not a straight line.

Granby's listed vertical and horizontal 275-gallon configurations have the same 60-inch length, with height and width swapped. The vertical configuration is 44 inches high by 27 wide; the horizontal is 27 high by 44 wide. A dimension string that does not identify the order can therefore be misleading even when all three numbers are present.
Highland Tank lists 44¼ inches where Granby lists 44. The charts compared below therefore describe closely related nominal sizes, not dimensionally identical tanks; the comparison reports the published difference without assigning it to an undocumented cause.
Double-wall and nonmetallic tanks
These models carry manufacturer listings to UL SU 2258 or UL/ULC 2258 rather than UL 80. They also show why a nominal 275-gallon label does not predict shape or headroom.

The minimum-height column is the one that catches people out. A Roth 1000L carries the same nominal 275-gallon label as a steel basement tank but requires 66 inches of installed height, while the low-profile 1000LH requires 60 inches.
Fiberglass tanks
Granby's two official brochures checked in this audit do not present an identical fiberglass lineup. The table uses the June 12, 2026 brochure for current values and labels rows that appear only in the official May 20, 2025 brochure.

Granby publishes separate capacity charts for some vertical fiberglass models. Those chart rows are outside the released 396-row chart CSV and are not reproduced on this page; a standard steel chart should not be substituted for a fiberglass model.
Highland Tank bench-top tanks
These four records are included so the visible tables account for all 55 model or configuration rows in the downloadable dimensions dataset. Highland's chart book supplies the dimensions but does not state a listing in the table used here.

A nominal gallon number does not identify a cylindrical geometry either. The same nominal size can be assigned to different diameter-and-length combinations.

A nominal 500-gallon Granby cylinder appears in two geometries: 46 inches in diameter by 72 inches long and 50 inches in diameter by 60 inches long. Highland likewise publishes two 1,000-gallon horizontal geometries, so diameter alone does not identify the model.
Why does one 275-gallon label cover six footprints?
The label is a nominal product designation, not a complete model identifier. These six dimension sets are all supported by the manufacturer documents in this release.

Six footprints, one number. The tallest is 61 inches; the shortest is 27. The longest is 60 inches; the shortest is 43. They do not share one conversion chart and they do not fit the same spaces.
How do you tell what size heating oil tank you have?
The tank's data plate is the most direct identifier because it can supply the manufacturer, model or product number and nominal capacity. Where the plate is missing or illegible, exterior shape and all available dimensions can narrow the family, but they do not justify applying a chart whose model and orientation have not been matched.
What distinguishes tanks, in order of usefulness:
- The data plate. Record the manufacturer, model or product number and nominal capacity. Those fields are more specific than a generic "275-gallon" label.
- The end profile. A flattened oval taller than it is wide is a vertical obround; wider than tall is a horizontal obround. A flat-sided double-wall tank and a true cylinder require different reference data.
- All three exterior dimensions. A 60-inch length alone does not settle the model. Height, width and length together can distinguish a 44 × 27 × 60-inch vertical obround from a 27 × 44 × 60-inch horizontal one and from the Roth rectangular configurations.
- Documented delivery history as corroboration only. A past delivery can show that the tank held at least that much available volume at the time, but it does not establish the tank's nominal or maximum capacity.
Tank interiors, fill openings, vent lines and buried equipment are handled by qualified heating or tank professionals. Nothing on this page is a procedure for opening, probing, entering, cutting, disconnecting or otherwise working on a tank.
What do the published inch-to-gallon charts show?
A gallons-per-inch chart belongs to a specific tank shape, orientation and chart family. The tables below preserve manufacturer values, distinguish selected page rows from the released CSV's complete series and keep source conflicts visible rather than forcing unlike documents into one number.

The 230-gallon column has no matching model in Granby's current U.S. Standard product lineup. At the final published row, four of the seven columns finish below nominal — 138, 220, 275 and 330 — while the 120 and 240 columns continue beyond 44 inches to 123 and 245 gallons.

Roth EcoDWT plus 3
Roth publishes gallons, liters and percentage full together for five models. The official installation manual and the standalone chart disagree at one 1000L cell, so the table uses the manual's internally consistent value and leaves the conflict visible.

Why is no Granby horizontal steel chart published here?
Granby's U.S. Standard product page labels its capacity-chart link "Capacity Chart for US Horizontal Tanks," but the destination file is named and titled "Capacity Chart for Vertical Tanks." As verified July 27, 2026, that link therefore does not support a Granby horizontal gallons-per-inch table.
Highland Tank does publish separate horizontal tables. Its nominal 275-gallon chart reads 51 gallons at 10 inches in the vertical orientation and 97 gallons at 10 inches in the horizontal orientation, which shows why a vertical chart cannot be transferred to the rotated geometry. The Highland horizontal rows are not part of the released 396-row CSV and are not presented as Granby values.
How much do two manufacturers' charts for the same nominal vertical size disagree?
The released comparison aligns Granby and Highland Tank rows at each one-inch depth for nominal 230-, 275- and 330-gallon vertical tanks. The 275-gallon series stays within 1.6 gallons at every depth, while the 330-gallon series reaches 6.5 gallons; the reported means are mean absolute differences, not signed averages.

Granby lists the compared 275- and 330-gallon vertical tanks at 44 inches high; Highland lists 44¼ inches. The dataset therefore measures differences between closely related nominal sizes, not one physically identical tank, and it does not assign the observed spread to undocumented manufacturing or rounding choices.

The comparison establishes that nominal labels and final chart rows are not interchangeable fields. It does not establish that either manufacturer's chart is wrong.
How much oil does a 275-gallon tank really hold?
The question mixes at least three quantities: nominal model capacity, liquid volume at a charted depth and an operational fill or usable amount. Granby and Highland publish 273.8 and 275 gallons at the final row of their compared vertical charts, while seven secondary sources publish about 225 to 251 gallons under definitions that are not consistent enough to combine.

Roth's 95% framework is manufacturer-specific evidence. Roth states that its EcoDWT plus 3 tanks are limited to 95% on its chart and that vent-whistle length can reduce the maximum further. That statement supports Roth's models; this page does not turn it into a universal percentage for every steel tank.
Vent-whistle position and installation details affect delivered volume. Roth expressly identifies whistle length as one reason the attainable maximum may be lower than the chart's 95% row. The reviewed secondary sources also use "usable," "full," "maximum fill" and "delivery" as if they were synonyms even when they are not.
A cited number must carry its definition. For manufacturer chart volume, use the model-specific row. For an operational fill amount, identify whose equipment and whose definition the number describes.
How was this collected and checked?
The release is a documentary dataset built from manufacturer and government sources checked July 27, 2026. It preserves source cells, publishes known conflicts and separates manufacturer measurements from calculations so every consequential number can be traced or reproduced.
Source hierarchy. Product dimensions, model capacities, listings and fill values were accepted from manufacturer product pages, brochures, installation manuals and capacity-chart PDFs. Federal and Connecticut claims were checked against the responsible regulator, current statute or regulation material. Dealer pages and the practitioner thread appear only in the explicitly labeled definition-divergence table.
What we collected. The release contains 55 model or configuration records across Granby Industries, Highland Tank and Roth North America; 22 distinct nominal capacities from 110 to 1,500 gallons; 396 complete one-inch chart rows across nine vertical series; 132 matched Granby–Highland comparison rows; and ten source-integrity findings. The nine complete series in the chart CSV are Granby 138, 220, 230, 275 and 330 gallons and Highland 137, 230, 275 and 330 gallons. Selected Granby 120/240, Roth and Highland-horizontal values shown on the page come directly from their primary documents but are not represented as part of that 396-row CSV.
Raw and normalized fields. A source's printed value stays visible. Where Roth documents conflict or a printed gallon/liter pair is internally inconsistent, the raw cells remain in the audit and any conversion is stored or stated separately; a calculated value never silently replaces a manufacturer cell.
Unit conversion. One U.S. liquid gallon equals 3.785411784 liters. A value obtained with that factor is labeled as a calculation, not a manufacturer measurement.
Chart comparison. For each matched depth, the signed field is Granby minus Highland and the absolute field is the magnitude of that difference. The summary means are arithmetic means of the 44 absolute differences for each nominal size.
Geometric consistency check. For a vertical obround shell, radius is half the width and the straight middle height is total height minus width. The circular-segment area at a depth below the lower radius was calculated as r² arccos((r − d) / r) − (r − d)√(2rd − d²); the middle adds a rectangle, and the upper curve uses the complementary segment. Cross-sectional area was multiplied by tank length and divided by 231 cubic inches per U.S. gallon.

The close Granby fit demonstrates that a simple obround-shell model is mathematically consistent with the published rows after one fitted multiplier. It does not disclose or prove Granby's internal engineering method.
This is a documentary dataset, not a field survey. The release reads manufacturer documents and official records; it does not measure installed tanks.
What did the source-integrity audit find?
The audit flags cross-document conflicts, internally inconsistent unit cells, label-versus-chart gaps and unavailable source links so they are visible rather than silently resolved. Publication treatment is stated for each finding.

Which tank-capacity thresholds change a standard or regulatory scope?
Capacity can change which technical standard or regulatory program applies, but similar-looking gallon thresholds govern different questions. The table separates manufacturer-listing scope, federal SPCC applicability, federal UST exclusions and Connecticut's residential/nonresidential rules instead of combining them into one ladder.

The federal heating-oil exclusion and the Connecticut program answer different questions. A tank excluded from the federal UST definition can still fall within a state program, and a Connecticut partial exemption below 2,100 gallons does not remove closure or failure requirements.
How do Connecticut rules change by tank type and capacity?
Connecticut draws the first residential line by the number of units served, not by a residential tank's gallon label. DEEP does not regulate the installation and use of a heating-oil UST serving four units or fewer under its UST program, while removal contractor, training, local-permit and leak rules still apply; a tank serving five or more units is nonresidential.
Residential systems serving four units or fewer.
Connecticut DEEP states that it does not regulate the installation and use of residential heating-oil tanks in this category under its UST program. DEEP also states that contamination from those systems and the cleanup of that contamination are regulated.
Permits and contractor roles.
DEEP directs owners to the local fire marshal and building department for permit requirements. Its residential guidance identifies home-improvement-contractor registration for tank work and a properly licensed plumber for oil piping. Former CGS §29-320 should not be cited as current authority: the General Assembly's current Chapter 541 states that the section was repealed effective July 1, 2017.
Training and insurance.
Current CGS §20-420 requires a contractor seeking the relevant residential underground-heating-oil-tank registration to demonstrate DEEP-approved hazardous-material training and at least $1 million in liability insurance. DEEP's current training page identifies 40-hour HAZWOPER training with annual eight-hour refreshers and the ICC U2 tank-decommissioning examination or an approved equivalent.
Removal deadline.
DEEP's residential FAQ answers "No" when asked whether a residential heating-oil UST must be removed by a specific deadline. The same answer states that a leaking tank must be promptly emptied and removed.
Known or discovered leaks.
DEEP states that a tank known to be leaking before removal must be removed by a permitted spill-cleanup contractor, and that a permitted spill-cleanup contractor must perform necessary remedial actions when a leak is discovered during removal.
Systems serving five or more residential units.
These are nonresidential heating-oil USTs under RCSA 22a-449(d)-1 unless the system also fuels an emergency generator, which changes the regulatory category. Connecticut's May 6, 2026 briefing makes clear that less than 2,100 gallons is a partial-exemption threshold for specified systems — not a blanket exemption from the program and not an exemption from closure or failure requirements.

What do current Census and consumption data show about heating oil?
Heating oil remains far more prevalent in Connecticut than in the country as a whole, while Hartford city is below the statewide share. The table uses the Census Bureau's own 2024 one-year estimates and margins of error and labels EIA's winter-consumption figure as a forecast rather than a measurement of every household.

The ACS category is "fuel oil, kerosene, etc." and its universe is occupied housing units. The estimates do not count tanks, identify tank sizes or show whether a property's tank is aboveground or underground. EIA's roughly 400-gallon figure is an average winter forecast for oil-heated households, not evidence that one tank size became standard for a particular reason.
Which heating-oil tank safety facts belong with a size chart?
The relevant safety facts explain why model identity, weight, pressure rating and leak status cannot be treated as chart trivia. They do not provide a procedure for moving, opening, entering, cutting, disconnecting, testing or removing a tank.
Empty-tank weight is already substantial. Granby lists its 12-gauge 275-gallon standard tank at 250 pounds and its 10-gauge 275-gallon configuration at 330 pounds before fuel is added.
The standard tanks are not pressure vessels. Granby identifies a 5 PSIG factory pressure test and atmospheric-pressure operation for the U.S. Standard line. A test pressure is not permission to pressurize installed equipment.
Orientation and support are model-specific. A tank's listed orientation, legs, base and installation requirements come from the manufacturer's documentation. A chart does not determine whether an installed tank is structurally sound.
Leaks change the contractor and cleanup requirements. Connecticut DEEP directs known leaking residential underground tanks and necessary remediation to permitted spill-cleanup contractors. DEEP also states that a petroleum release to soil or water is a discharge to the waters of the state and that the responsible party must clean up the release.

What are the limitations of this heating oil tank size chart?
Product lines and source files change. The current Granby brochure is revision 06/12/26, Highland's chart book carries HT-6000-01/2021 and Roth's reviewed chart/manual files predate this verification pass. A future revision can change a model, cell or source URL.
Charts require the right model and orientation. A nominal capacity alone does not establish the applicable cross-section or conversion table.
Charts assume the installation conditions represented by the publisher. A tank that is out of level, deformed, differently constructed or not positively identified can produce a different reading.
Low-depth precision is not separately specified. Granby states approximately ±2% precision but does not publish a separate low-depth error model in the chart, so this page does not turn that statement into a fixed-gallon allowance.
Granby excludes purchase-and-sale use. Granby says its capacity chart is not intended for purchases or sales of products. Neither the manufacturer charts nor this page are custody-transfer measurements.
Roth's 95% rule is a Roth-source statement. Roth says its EcoDWT plus 3 tanks must not be filled above the chart's 95% level and that vent-whistle length can lower the attainable maximum. This page does not apply that percentage automatically to every manufacturer's tank.
Nominal capacity is a product designation. Final chart rows can finish above, below or at the nominal number, and the label should not be substituted for a measured source cell.
No Granby horizontal values were inferred. The current U.S. Standard page's chart link resolves to a vertical chart, so the release publishes Granby horizontal dimensions without manufacturing a Granby horizontal fill table.
Fiberglass and 2-in-1 manufacturer charts exist but are outside the 396-row release. The chart CSV is limited to nine complete vertical series from Granby and Highland. Selected Roth rows and Granby 120/240 values appear on the page from primary documents but are not described as part of that CSV.
Granby's fiberglass D202 documents conflict. The current June 2026 brochure value is used in the model CSV, and the older official May 2025 value remains visible in the audit.
The 225-to-251-gallon secondary range is not one measurement. The sources use "full," "usable," "maximum fill" and delivery amounts differently; the page does not collapse them into an average.
ACS values are survey estimates. Counts and percentages carry the published margins of error, and the ACS fuel category combines fuel oil with kerosene and related fuels.
Law and agency guidance can change. The legal section records the sources and date checked; it is not a substitute for the authority governing a particular property on a later date.
This is not a tank inspection, environmental determination or settlement measurement. It does not replace the tank's data plate, manufacturer documentation, a qualified professional or the authority having jurisdiction.
Which figures and source gaps were excluded from publication?
The audit closes unresolved gaps by excluding the unsupported figure rather than leaving a placeholder or supplying an estimate. These exclusions are part of the release record and explain why several commonly repeated numbers do not appear in the final tables.
Granby horizontal gallons-per-inch values. The current U.S. Standard page's link points to a vertical chart. No value from that file is presented as a Granby horizontal value.
Current Granby dimensions for the chart-only 230-gallon column. The chart column remains published as a source cell, but it is not assigned a current U.S. Standard model or dimensions.
A Hartford County 2024 one-year figure. Hartford County's pre-2022 county geography is not used for a current county claim. The page publishes the supported Hartford city estimate and no Hartford County number.
Unverified model-code thresholds. Numeric IRC, IFC or NFPA 31 thresholds from third-party code pages were removed because the authoritative adopted text for the applicable jurisdiction was not directly verified in this pass.
The older Connecticut "45%" statement and an unverified 2014 comparison. They were removed rather than forced into the current ACS series, which uses a specific 2024 category and margins of error.
